Go to Taiwan

Part 3: Going to Jiufen

Gwangju Jeil High School, Im Jinwoo

Taiwan's capital is Taipei, and its population is about 23 million, with a subtropical climate. Religion is a country with various religions such as Christianity, Catholicism and Taoism in traditional Buddhism.

Jiwoofun is the best place to feel Taiwan's old mood. The Jiufen area became a popular tourist destination in 1989, when it became the backdrop for the film 'Jeongseong City', which won the Grand Prix at the 46th Venice International Film Festival. It is also known as the location for the drama “On Air” in Korea. In addition, I remember it as the background of the animated film called Miyazaki Haya's "Sen and Chihiro's Away".

Jiufen was originally a city that flourished with gold mining in the 1920s and 1930s, but has since declined into a secluded rural village after the mines were abandoned. However, these days it is said to represent Taiwan as a tourist city.   I took a bus and found the winding “Suchiru” red light street. It was like a place reminiscent of Korea's traditional market. There are many restaurants on both sides of the narrow alley, and Taiwan's unique foods such as grilled skewers, peanut ice cream, and red bean shaved ice are on display. Some red lamps also had the phrase "不 好吃, 不用 錢", which means that if it doesn't taste, the owner won't get paid. I wanted to taste Jiufen, so I hung up in a row and ate skewers. Surprisingly, the actual meat was hung on the ceiling, and the meat was sliced to make a skewer. It is unimaginable in Korea.

This is like the past of Korea. The teahouses and the views overlooking the narrow alleys seemed like a picture. My mom and I took a picture against the backdrop of the restaurant, “悲情 城市,” which is the backdrop for the movie. Mom said that '紅燈' is the red light of Chinese tradition. Therefore, it is associated with the traditional Chinese culture and life that red light is associated with.

It was a day where I could feel the unique charm of Jiufen that can really feel Chinese.
