  ‘료칸’이라는 숙소에 대해서 들어봤을 거다. 료칸은 일본의 전통적인 숙박시설로서, 일본식 다다미와 일본 전통적인 시설을 갖추고 있는 숙소를 말한다.

  일본 여행을 자주하는 나로서는, 료칸의 숙박료가 만만치 않다는 것을 잘 알고 있다. 우리나라에서도 전주 한옥마을의 한옥숙박이 가격이 비싼 것처럼, 일본도 전통적인 숙박시설에 대해 가치를 많이 부여하고 있는 것 같았다.

  료칸을 입장했을 때, 좌식문화, 차가 준비되어있고 깔끔한 느낌이 나긴하지만, 바닥에 깔려있는 돗자리가 왠지 축축한 느낌도 들었다. 우리나라는 온돌문화여서 바닥이 따뜻한데, 일본은 우리와는 다르게 바닥이 난방이 되지 않는다고 한다. 다행히도 우리는 양식으로, 침대가 있는 료칸이었다.

  또 한가지 재미있는 것은 일본의 전통복인 유카타가 놓여있다. 유카타는 남녀 공통으로 입는 것으로 좌측 깃이 위로 올라가게 입는 것이 맞다고 한다. 즉, 앞에서 봤을 때 목 부분이 영어 소문자인 “y’모양이 되면 옳게 입는것이라고 한다. 나는 유카타를 갈아입고 일본의 차문화를 즐긴다음, 아래의 욕탕 시설을 이용한다. 일본의 욕탕은 화산으로 인한 온천물이 아주 효능이 좋다고 알려져 있으며, 무엇보다 특이한 점은 남자 목욕탕에 아주머니가 청소하러 들어오신다는 것이다. 정말 이 부분은 깜짝 놀랄만한 일이었다. 또한 노천탕은 차갑고 상큼한 공기를 쐬면서 몸은 아주 뜨거운 물에 담그는 그 시원함이란 이루 표현할 수가 없다. 이렇게 뜨거운 온천욕은 료칸이 난방이 잘 되지 않기 때문에 효과가 있다는 이야기도 있다.

  정말 해보지 않은 사람은 모를 것이다. 스트레스도 풀리고 몸에 혈액순환이 되면서 머리는 말끔해지는 느낌인 것이다. 특히 일본은 혼욕 노천탕까지 있다는 가이드 이야기를 듣고 정말 할 말을 잃었다.

일본의 문화는 우리나라와 다른 점도 있지만 비슷한 점도 꽤 많다. 아마도 같은 동양이고, 역사적으로 많은 부분이 얽혀 있어서 그럴 것이다 라는 생각이 든다.

PartⅣ Ryokan and Hot Springs

  You may have heard about the ryokan. A ryokan is a traditional Japanese lodging facility that has traditional tatami mats and traditional Japanese facilities.

  As a frequent traveler to Japan, I know that the ryokan is expensive. Just as the price of hanok in Jeonju Hanok Village is high in Korea, Japan seemed to give much value to traditional accommodation.

  When I entered the ryokan, there was a sedentary culture, tea was prepared and neat, but the mat on the floor felt wet. Our country is ondol culture, so the floor is warm, but in Japan, the floor is not heated. Fortunately we were a ryokan with beds, in Western style.

  Another interesting thing is the yukata, a traditional Japanese clothing. Yukata is said to be worn by both men and women. In other words, if you look at the neck in the shape of the letter “y” in lowercase English, you are wearing it correctly. After changing Yukata and enjoying Japanese tea culture, I use the following bath facilities.

  Japanese baths are known to be very effective in volcanic hot springs, and the most unusual thing is that a woman comes to the men's bath for cleaning. Indeed, this was a surprise. In addition, the open-air bath gives off cool and fresh air, and the body is so cool that it is soaked in very hot water. This hot spring bath is said to be effective because the ryokan is not well heated.

  If you haven't really done it, you won't know. As the stress is released and the blood circulates in the body, the head feels neat. Especially in Japan, I heard a guide saying that even men and women have open-air baths.

  Japanese culture is different from Korea, but there are many similarities. Perhaps it's the same East, and that's because there's a lot of history involved.
