Japan travel

PartⅥ. The Otaru Canal and the Sapporo Old Town Hall

Gwangju Jeil High School, Im Jinwoo

One of Hokkaido's best spots is Otaru Canal. My grandfather and mother, I visited the Otaru Canal. Since there is no canal in Korea, it was difficult to imagine it as a canal. Otaru was said to have built a canal from 1914 to 1923 to unload ships. The canal, where ships traveled, was transformed into a major tourist destination in Ottaru in 1986, with trails around the canal. At night, exotic night views spread out, and the surroundings were filled with antique stores and fine restaurants. Otaru Canal is especially famous for its gas. It is connected to coal and turned on by gas, and the scene reflected by the soft light is becoming a beautiful point. In the past, there were a lot of herring, coal and banks, so the area was quite developed, but now everything is gone and remains only as a tourist destination. I felt something like that of Otaru Canal, the end of my life, when the young and gorgeous days have passed and only years and veins remain in the flow of time.

There were too many tourists around the Otaru Canal. It rained and struggled to take a viewpoint to take pictures of each other. We left some pictures to remember and moved to the next building, the Sapporo Old Town Hall.

The Sapporo Old Metropolitan Government Building is said to be designated as a provincial library that houses old documents of Hokkaido reconstructed by fire. Most of all, the building made of “red brick” was impressive. It looked like a building that was seen as an old Japanese architecture in Korea. Most of all, I went inside, and it consisted of a document hall, a museum, an Akarenga Northern Territory Hall, an international exchange souvenir exhibition hall, and a memorial room. The most impressive thing is that the offices of the past governors are preserved. In each office there were pictures.

It felt like watching an old government building in Korea. Japan seems to preserve its history and culture in its own way. Many things have been woven together with our country, but anyway, we have learned more about how Japan protects its own culture.
