많은 사람들이 해리포터란 영화를 봤을 거다. 내가 2018년에 영국을 방문했을 때는 해리포터 영화로 인해 전 세계 많은 관광 인파들이 촬영장을 구경하기에 영국으로 몰려들었던 때이다.

나 역시도 해리포터에 관심이 많았기에, 해리포터의 마법학교로 유명했던 영국의 명문대학인 옥스포드 대학을 방문하고 싶은 마음이 굴뚝같았다. 그런데 재미있는 것은 옥스포드 대학이란 하나의 대학을 말하는게 아니고, 옥스포드에 있는 38개의 대학들을 모두 일컫는 이름이라는 점에 놀랐다.

나는 엄마와 함께 해리포터의 마법학교이자 옥스포드 대학 중 하나인 크라이스트 처치(Christ Church)를 방문하기로 하였다. 크라이스트 처치 대학은 옥스포드에서 가장 큰 대학이자 1525년 개교한 이래 13명의 영국 총리를 배출한 전통이 있는 학교이며, ‘이상한나라의 앨리스’저자 루이스캐럴도 이 학교 출신이라 한다. 특히 옥스포드 대학들 중 가장 크며, 전 세계에서 성당으로 사용하기도 하면서 대학이기도 한 유일한 학교라고 한다.

크라이스트 처치를 구경하기 위해선 약￡9한화 12,000원의 입장료를 지불해야 하는데, 전 세계에서 온 여행인파 때문에 우리는 약 20분간 줄을 서서 겨우 들어갈 수 있었다.

안에 들어가 보니, 해리포트의 영화 장면이 내 머릿속을 스쳐지나가며, 다이닝홀로 들어갔다. 그곳은 실제로 식당으로 사용되고 있다고 했고, 많은 관광객들로 사진 찍는 소리에 너무 정신이 없었다. 무엇보다 놀랬던 것은 초상화다. 식당 벽에 걸린 수많은 초상화는 앞으로 좋은 대학을 가서 훌륭한 사람이 되면, 후세에 저렇게 추앙받으면서 초상화로 기억될 수 있다는 무언의 압력을 주는 것 같았다.

우리는 이동하여, 보들리안 도서관으로 자리를 이동했다. 이 도서관은 해리포터 영화에서 양탄자를 타고 다니며 퀴디치 연습장면을 찍었던 기억이 뇌리에 스쳤다. 이 도서관은 900만권이상의 장서를 보유하며 유럽에서 가장 오랜된 도서관이라고 한다. 나도 이런 좋은 환경이 갖추어진 대학을 다녀보고 싶은 생각이 들었다. 도서관 앞 탁 트인 잔디는 너무나도 아름답고 푸른 잔디가 평화로워 보여, 누워서 책 읽고 싶은 느낌이 저절로 들었다. 그러나 경비원이 통제를 하여 못 들어오게 했다. 우리는 그냥 겉으로만 분위기를 느낄 수밖에 없었다.

이러한 여운들을 간직하며, 나는 2019년 8월, 다시 한번 영국의 옥스포드 대학을 방문하게 되었다. 학구적인 분위기를 한국에 돌아가서도 간직하기 위해, 옥스포드 지갑, 수첩, 볼펜 등 다양한 물건을 샀다. 지금까지도 그 물건들은 나에게 잘 간직되어 있다. 앞으로의 내 인생에 길라잡이가 될 것으로 믿는다.

PartⅠ. Visit to Oxford University

   Many people would have seen a movie called Harry Potter. When I visited the UK in 2018, Harry Potter movies attracted many tourists from all over the world to the UK to visit the filming site.

   I was also interested in Harry Potter, so I wanted to visit Oxford University, a prestigious British university that was famous for Harry Potter's magic school.

   But what's interesting is that I'm surprised that Oxford University is not just a university, but the name of all 38 colleges in Oxford.

   I decided to go with my mother to Christ Church, Harry Potter's magic school and one of Oxford University. Christchurch University is Oxford's largest university and has a tradition of producing 13 British prime ministers since its opening in 1525.

   Louis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, is also from this school. It is the largest of all Oxford universities, and is the only school in the world that also serves as a cathedral.

  Visiting Christchurch requires an entrance fee of around KRW 12,000, but due to travel from all over the world, we were only able to wait in line for about 20 minutes.

  Inside, Harry's movie scene passed through my head and entered the dining hall. It was said that it was actually used as a restaurant, and the sound of taking pictures with many tourists was too loud.

  What surprised me most was the portrait. Numerous portraits on the walls of the restaurant seemed to put some pressure on the future of going to a good university and becoming a great person, remembering them as portraits.

  We moved and moved to the Bodleian Library. The library remembers playing Quidditch on a rug in a Harry Potter movie. The library holds more than 9 million books and is said to be the oldest library in Europe. I also wanted to go to a university with such a good environment. The open lawn in front of the library is so

  I also found the beautiful green grass peaceful, and I felt like reading a book by myself. But the guards got out of control. We could only feel the atmosphere.

   In keeping with these aftertastes, I visited Oxford University in England once again in August 2019. In order to keep the academic atmosphere back in Korea, I bought various items such as an oxford wallet, a notebook and a ballpoint pen. So far, these things are well kept by me. I believe it will be a guide to my future life.
