  영국여행에서 코츠월드는 빠질 수 없는 여행지라는 것이 해리포터, 반지의 제왕, 이상한 나라의 앨리스 등의 판타지의 고향으로 영국사람들이 은퇴 후에 제일 가고 싶어 하는 곳이기 때문이란다. 코츠월드는 약 200여개의 마을이 있으며, 영국 남서부에 자리한 시골마을이라고 한다. 이러한 코츠월드 지역은 도시 전체가 AONB(Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) 즉,특별 자연 미관 지역으로 지정되어 있을 정도로 아름다운 풍경을 지니고 있다고 한다.

  우리는 200여개의 마을이 있는 코츠월드에서도 그중 가장 인기가 있다는 바이버리와 버튼온더워터를 가기로 했다.

  영국의 시인인 윌리엄 모리스가 영국에서 가장 아름다운 마을이라고 극찬을 아끼지 않은 ‘바이버리’에 도착했다. 날씨가 추워서 마을 전체의 기운을 만끽하기에는 좀 힘들었지만, 오두막집이 옹기종기 모여 있고, 소박하지만 예쁘고 아기자기한 시골의 정경은 왜 은퇴 후에 남은 인생을 보내고 싶은 곳인지를 알 수 있었다. 좀 불편했던 점은 돈을 내고 화장실을 가야한다는 점이었다. 우리는 모델처럼 포즈를 취하면서 마을 곳곳에서 사진 찍기에 바빴다. 둘러보다가 기념품 가게에 들렀는데, 윌리엄모리스의 작품들이 앞치마나 스카프, 컵, 우산 등에 적용되어 기념품으로 판매되고 있었다. 엄마는 앞치마를 하나 샀고, 나는 영국이 티로 유명하기 때문에 영국 차 잎을 샀다. 한국으로 돌아가 차를 마시며, 다시 한번 이곳을 떠올려보기로 하고 다음 장소인 ‘버튼온더워터’ 로 가기위해 버스에 몸을 맡겼다.

  드디어 ‘버튼온더워터’에 도착했다. 무엇보다 마을 한 중앙에 큰 개울가가 있다는 게 인상적이었다. 왜냐면 이 개울가 주변으로 많은 사람들이 개를 산책시키기도 하고, 따뜻한 햇볕을 쬐면서 여유를 즐기면서 물에 발을 담그기도 하고, 주변에 펼쳐져있는 레스토랑에서 식사도 하면서 도란도란 이야기를 나누는 모습들이 인상적이었다. 우리는 개울가에 있는 오리를 보면서, 레스토랑에 들어가 피자랑 파스타를 시켰다. 밖을 보면서 맛있는 식사를 하고 나와서 그 유명하다던 아이스크림을 사먹었다.

  꾸미지 않고 아주 자연스러우면서도 노년을 편안하고 안정적으로 보내려는 영국 사람들의 정서가 느껴지는 그런 마을들이었다. 나도 앞으로 내 인생을 살면서, 몇 십년 후에 다가올 은퇴 후의 생활을 다시 한번 생각할 수 있는 기회가 되었다.

PartⅢ. The Village of Bibury and Button-on-the-Water in Cotswolds

  Cotswolds are an indispensable destination for travel in the UK, where Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Alice in Wonderland are home to fantasy and are the places British people want to go after retirement.

  Cotswold is a rural village located in southwestern England with about 200 villages. This Cotswolds area is the entire area of ​​Outstanding Natural Beauty. In other words, the landscape is so beautiful that it is designated as a special natural beauty area.

  We decided to go to Bibury and Button-on-the-Water, the most popular of which are in Cotswolds, home to over 200 villages.

  British poet William Morris arrives at Bibury, which is praised for being the most beautiful village in the country.

It was hard to enjoy the energy of the whole town because of the cold weather, but the cottages were filled with pottery, and the simple but pretty countryside was a good idea of ​​why the English people wanted to live the rest of their life after retirement. The inconvenience was that I had to pay for the toilet.

We were busy taking pictures all over the village posing like models. I looked around and went to a souvenir shop, where William Morris's works were applied to aprons, scarves, cups, and umbrellas and sold as souvenirs. Mom bought an apron and I bought English tea leaves because England is famous for tea. I went back to Korea to drink tea and decided to think of this place again and took a bus to go to the next place, 'Burton on the Water'.

  Finally, we arrived at 'Burton on the Water'. Above all, it was impressive that there was a river in the middle of the village. Because of the water, many people walked the dogs, enjoyed the warm sun, soaked their feet in the water, and enjoyed a simple meal while dining at the restaurant.

 We watched the ducks in the water, entered the restaurant and had pizza and pasta. Looking out, I had a delicious meal and ate the famous ice cream.

  What I have felt is that these villages are very natural but feel the sentiments of the British people who want to spend their old age comfortably and reliably. I also had the opportunity to rethink my life after my retirement in the coming decades.
